Chapter 10

Up to and including this moment, Davin could confidently describe his day as somewhere on the scale between ‘as pleasant as a giant pile of troll shit’ and ‘getting eaten alive by a rabid Hellhound.’ First, his daemon exploded at the agency and shredded Davin’s control in front of his entire staff. Pent up with fury and frustration, the beast ended up destroying everything in sight. Then, Sam admitted he went to Dante with a severe—and wholly unnecessary—case of verbal diarrhea, blabbing to Dante everything that went down, including the behavior that lead to Davin’s flip out.

The only reason Davin didn’t snap Sam in two was the fact that he did him a huge favor by wiping the memories of all who witnessed his spectacular fall from grace. Mayhap it wasn’t exactly legal, but Sam saved Davin’s pride—what little he had left, anyway—to ensure he could continue to show his face at work rather than hide in his penthouse and drink himself into a bottomless, wonderful, oblivion.

Unfortunately, now Davin owed the little shit. Because Sam assisted whilst he was in a bind, he ground his teeth and overlooked Sam’s need to tattle tale to Dante. On top of that, for some unknown reason, Davin agreed to listen to Sam and Dante give him a tag team lecture. The dreadful meeting—in which Dante’s friend, Jack, for some inexplicable reason decided he must needs be present —ended and Davin inexplicably allowed Dante to bring him to Eastlake Falls Hospital. Sam returned to the agency and the wraith took his leave soon after.

Oh, Davin didn’t miss the lusty looks Jack threw Sam’s way. It was impossible to anyone with functional eyes. And he didn’t like it. Not one bit.

The plan hammered out between Jack, Sam, and Dante, without any input on Davin’s part as they ignored him at every turn, consisted of him speaking with Lukas Christos, the physician who tended to Dante whence he lost his connection to his soul mate. The saint also happened be the one to mend Verity’s leg. The one broken due to Davin’s utter carelessness.

Initially, he expressed irritation at them bullying him to see Luke. He balked for several minutes, but when Dante threatened to go to the Trinity and lay out every detail with regards to Davin losing control of his daemon—the sneaky bastard—Davin capitulated. Besides, Davin must needs think of his pride, and begging help from Luke was quite the blow, but Davin wasn’t naïve. He knew he required answers neither he nor Dante could provide. Davin simply had too much pride to ask… until now. After tearing apart a room in full view of humans, pride was no longer a factor. Davin knew something must needs be done to control his daemon, and soon, lest he commit a crime that earned a punishment.

He shuddered at the thought.

The last thing Davin expected whilst striding down the administrative corridor of Eastlake Falls Hospital, was for the very female—thoughts of whom tortured his daemon day and
